One of the most powerful tools in Excel is the if statement. An if statement has the following structure: test a question, if the answer is “Yes”, do one thing. If it’s “No”, do something else. For example, a use of it would be in exam results – have you scored over 50% – yes, you pass. No – you fail.  You can also nest if functions inside each other (to be covered in another blog post) or combine an IF statement with IF and OR. In the video below, I’m just going to show you how to construct a simple if statement. However, one thing I do say when I teach this is that the time you spend actually figuring out and naming the problem i.e. what exactly do I want to test for here – will save you a lot of time down the road…
